A survival guide to everyday life on the internet based on UW Professors Bergstrom and West’s book Calling Bullshit. Included are methods to verify online media and to discern and critically analyze hoaxes, rumors, and misinformation. Fake news and other misleading information are often used to sow division and discord and in many cases they target vulnerable groups. This course provides practice in the techniques necessary to take responsibility for truth and information validity in an effective democracy and to slow the spread of false information.

Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL& 101 and basic computer skills such as e-mail and word processing.
