EDUC 140 - Introduction to Special Education


Credits: 5

Introduction to Special Education, is a survey course that provides both an historical and a contemporary overview of the field of special education and how it is utilized in K-12 schools. Social inequity is a key theme in this course. Students will gain an increased understanding of the marginalization of differently abled students and the ramifications of institutionalized academic discrimination.  In addition, the course focuses on the various types of exceptionalities including learning challenged students, gifted students, second language learners, the characteristics of such learners, the legal requirements and laws connected to special education, the teacher’s role in accommodating the needs of exceptional learners, the role of the family in an exceptional learner’s education, inclusive education,and instructional best practices including Universal Design for Learning( UDL), Response to Intervention (RTI), differentiated instruction, among others.
