Education (AA-DTA)

With an AA-DTA degree from Olympic College, students can directly transfer to a WA state public university. In contrast, if they choose to transfer to a private university that offers a teacher education training program, their transcript will be scrutinized for transferability and not all courses may transfer. Therefore, it is essential that students who plan to transfer to a private school either within Washington state or out of state work closely with an advisor at the institution they plan to transfer to before completing their education plan.

A degree in Education is a useful tool leading students to multiple career paths. With an AA degree students might choose to become a Paraeducator or Teacher Assistant, working alongside the classroom teacher and often working with Special Needs students. Another option is to become a Preschool Teacher.

Another pathway includes becoming a K-12 teacher in a public or a private school by earning a bachelor’s degree at a 4- year institution. A third pathway involves becoming a professional tutor or working in an administrative staff capacity at an institution of higher education. A useful resource to explore additional educational careers and pathways is the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook which is published annually.

Courses to Consider

The following are foundational courses to a degree in Education:

Quarter by Quarter Plan

The following is a list of suggested courses to meet the requirements for the Associate in Arts - Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) degree and to better prepare you for focusing on this major at the University level. Please note that you are not required to carry this credit load or follow this sequence.

Fall - First Year

Spring - Second Year

Note

Additional electives can come from any of the following: World Languages such as SPAN or ASL; Computer Science, Education such as EDUC 199 - Education Practicum, or Communication Studies. Students who plan to principally teach a major subject at the middle school or high school level such as Math, English, or History should consider taking additional electives in these areas. All Education students regardless of major previously listed will increase their job marketability by having a strong coursework background in diversity-designated courses, at least 1 foreign language, plus computer literacy. To ensure that electives transfer to their selected 4-year university, students are encouraged to work with the university’s education advisor throughout their degree at Olympic College.
