Welcome to Olympic College!

Greetings Olympic College Rangers,

Welcome to a new year at Olympic College! Although the college is still feeling the impact of COVID-19, we're excited to be taking steps that get us closer to business as usual.

This time last year, the college community faced an unprecedented challenge. As the extent of COVID-19's spread became apparent, the college made the difficult decision to move all instruction and services online. As the pandemic continued and state and national leaders sprang into action, the college received more than $3.13 million in CARES Act funding, and distributed more than $1.55 million directly to students to help them continue their education during the pandemic. And we continue to distribute additional rounds of grants that are helping students stay on track.

I don't think any of us realized how long the college - and daily life, for that matter - would be impacted by COVID-19. But we have weathered the storm, and thanks to a variety of safety measures and the rollout of highly effective vaccines, it is showing signs of abating. More than a year after we took these measures to keep students, staff and faculty safe, I'm happy to report that Olympic College is taking the first step in returning to in-person instruction and services by making more than 300 on-campus courses available this fall. We intend to add even more in-person classes as circumstances allow, but we believe this is a terrific start.

Although we are all eager for a return to normal, it is important to acknowledge that in some ways, we will be returning to a new normal. Times of challenge breed innovation, and over the past year we have delivered a quality educational experience online, even for classes not normally offered online. As classes and services return to campus, we will incorporate what we've learned about remote instruction and services to advance our goal of promoting equitable outcomes to underserved students.

COVID-19 shouldn't overshadow the college's other important work. Olympic College continues to promote equity through our laser-focus on student achievement. As part of that work, the college is implementing Guided Pathways - a research-based initiative that aims to close equity gaps and improve graduation rates by grouping the college's courses into programs of study that give students clear pathways to their chosen major or career, and clearly outlining why each course is important to the student's academic program. Our work on these efforts continued throughout the pandemic and will continue into the future.

As we return to normalcy, we all deserve to breathe a sigh of relief. But we also must not falter in our ongoing efforts to serve our students and help them achieve their goals, while always striving to find new, innovative ways to do so. If you need help, please reach out; the Welcome Center is a good place to start. We're always here to serve our students, whether online or on campus!

Together, We are OC!
