The Construction Trades Certificate of Completion prepares students for a career in the residential and light construction industry as a carpenter’s helper, construction laborer, and construction apprentice in local carpenters’ and laborers’ unions. The program teaches students safe and proper use of hand and power tools, personal protective equipment, worksite and job safety, foundation layout and framing, wall, floor, and roof framing, and interior and exterior finishing techniques used in the construction industry.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
1. Analyze and interpret residential building prints, plans, and specifications.
2. Layout and assist in the construction of common components of a residential building project, including foundation, floor, wall, roof framing, and stair systems.
3. Assist in the planning of a residential construction project, including phasing, sequencing, materials, equipment, and tools required.
4. Evaluate construction site hazards and implement personal, equipment, and site safety mitigation measures per industry standards.
5. Describe the advantages and opportunities for continuing education through apprenticeships, internships, organizational memberships, self-learning, advanced education, and on the job training.
6. Work effectively in a team environment.
