Documentary Filmmaking (CR)

Upon completion of this 15-credit Certificate of Recognition, students will have learned the craft of making a documentary film, from development through distribution, in a hands-on and project-based environment. After receiving their certificate, students will have the skills to create their own documentary films to sell in the marketplace, create documentary-style “explainer” videos for companies, and/or gain employment with companies seeking documentary video expertise. These skills broaden job opportunities for students in the specialization of documentary filmmaking.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Create documentary and non-fiction content from idea to completion.
- Develop a pitch reel and deck for various funding sources.
- Obtain research and archive collection skills.
- Practice the art and craft of interviewing subjects.
- Effectively utilize digital cameras, lighting and audio equipment in studio and location settings.
- Acquire and develop film directing skills as it relates to the documentary form.
- Effectively utilize dramatic act structure and apply to their own documentary film project.
- Integrate and demonstrate non-linear digital film editing and visual effects skills on a documentary film project.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the various contemporary distribution methods for documentary films.

Prior experience in film production (camera work) and post-production (editing) is required, or completion of courses in the following areas:
