Credits: 5

(H/DSJ) This course surveys Asian American and Pacific Islander American literature from the mid-20th century to the present, with particular attention to the stylistic elements, thematic concerns, and contexts from which the works emerge. Key questions will be asked. With its definitions and boundaries always changing, what exactly does “Asian American literature” or “Pacific Islander American literature” mean? How do histories of war, empire, and colonialism influence such literature? What insights can be learned about Asian American and Pacific Islander empowerment, community formation, and the intersections between race, gender, sexuality, and other forms of social difference? Texts may include novels, short stories, manifestos, drama, manga, poetry, social media, newspapers, protest art, film, food, and pop culture.
