AEGS 206 - Intro to Oceania & Pacific Islander Studies Credits: 5
(H/SS/DSJ) This course is an introduction to Oceania and Pacific Islander Studies. An emphasis is placed on the people of the Pacific Islands across Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. We will examine the cultural expressions, historical experiences, and contemporary social issues that gave rise to and continue to shape Pacific Islander communities in the United States and the broader diaspora. We will also center Indigenous knowledge rooted in relationships to the land, to the seas, and to one another. Topics may include storytelling, tourism, colonialism, militarization, sovereignty, gender, sexuality, and resistance movements.
Prerequisite: Any of the following are recommended but NOT required: AEGS 100, AEGS 101, ENGL&101, or SOC& 101. 5 hours Lecture
