The Olympic College Phlebotomy Certificate of Completion prepares graduates with the education and training to become entry level and competent phlebotomists with mental, physical, and ethical knowledge and skills for a career in a variety of healthcare settings. The Phlebotomy program is designed to prepare qualified candidates to become phlebotomists in a 1 quarter or 2 quarter pathway.
The one quarter phlebotomy pathway, Certificate of Recognition, is designed to prepare qualified healthcare professionals or students that have successfully completed at least one quarter in the Associate Degree in Nursing Program or Practical Nursing Program or at least one quarter containing a clinical course in the Medical Assisting Program.
Admission to the phlebotomy program is dependent upon meeting prerequisites and/or transcript review for students and/or validation of licensure for current practitioners. Qualified practitioners include current unencumbered licensed Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician, or Registered Nurse in the state of Washington, Airforce Medics (4NOX1, skill level 5), or Navy Corpsmen (HM000, Rank: HM3, E-4 and above). Or with instructor permission.
Clinical Documentation Requirements include:
- Proof of up-to-date immunization status including, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis, Measles, Mumps & Rubell, Hepatitis B, COVID and Influenza.
- Phlebotomy Student Handbook forms
- Criminal History Information Background Check. **A student who cannot participate in patient care delivery in clinical settings during practicum externship based on a positive background inquiry check will not be able to successfully complete the program.**
Students will incur the same fees as other Olympic College students, plus:
- Computer lab and clinical lab fees
- Purchase of scrubs and appropriate shoes
- Vaccinations and or titers (blood draws) as needed to meet program requirements.
- Criminal History Information Background Check
- Cost of malpractice and liability insurance coverage
- Cost of healthcare insurance coverage for the duration of the Program.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Accurately perform phlebotomy procedures and electrocardiograms (EKG).
- Communicate with a diverse population of patients and other healthcare professionals.
- Provide care in an ethical and professional manner.
- Apply safety and infection control standards in a variety of healthcare settings.

Required Courses (13-14 credits)
Phlebotomy for Healthcare Professionals Pathway
American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider Certification required. May provide proof of current certification in replacement of MEDA100.
Prerequisites
- Current unencumbered licensed Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician, or Registered Nurse in the state of Washington
- A student that has successfully completed at least one quarter in the Associate Degree in Nursing Program, Practical Nursing Program, or at least one quarter containing a clinical course in the Medical Assisting Program
- Airforce Medics (4NOX1, skill level 5) or Navy Corpsmen (HM000, Rank: HM3, E-4 and above), or
