DRMA 291 - New Waves in Cinema

(H) This course examines the origins of the “New Wave” in 1950s France and the proliferation of new waves in world cinema through present day. Focusing on cinemas from various countries and regions, the course will eexplore the cultural and technological contexts that generated a rupture in dramatic arts and the studio system, creating the “new independent cinema” and “new media” that classifies the environment in which the majority of today’s cinema is made. Students will examine the influence of digital cinema on the body of work produced under the rubric of “New Cinemas” and trace its development through to the present.
