Credits: 5

(SS) In contemporary culture, movies play a significant role in influencing our understanding of ourselves, those around us, and the interpersonal culture we live in.  This introductory psychology class provides students with an exploration of topics, theories, and practices relating to the depiction of psychology in narrative film and its application to self-development.

Emphasis is placed on examining how motion pictures depict psychologically relevant issues such as the portrayal of disorders and mental illness, human behavior, social identity, gender, the male gaze, archetypes, etc.  Students gain critical insight and working knowledge of analyzing conventional films in terms of theme, characterization, and plot and their psychological impact on the audience. The modality used in the approach to subject matter in this class is Postmodern Narrative Therapy.
