The Marine Electrical Certificate of Completion introduces students to the installation, maintenance and repair of shipboard electrical systems. Its outcomes align with both shipbuilder journeyman marine electrician requirements as well as National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) Basic Marine Electronics Installer certification. Graduates may seek employment as apprentice marine electricians. The certificate has been designed in partnership with, and to meet the needs of, the Puget Sound Ship Repair Association (PSSRA) for maritime electricians. 

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:


1.    Students will utilize common electrical and electronic principles, such as Ohm’s and Kirchov’s laws, as they apply to simulated circuitry.
2.    Students will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of electrical safety procedures as it applies to grounds, wire installation, equipment adjustment, electrical measurements and tag out procedures.
3.    Students will demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of Electromagnetic safety as it applies to transmitters, antennas and microwaves.
4.    Students will demonstrate proficiency of basic electronic circuitry as it applies to common marine electrical and electronic equipment, such as RADAR, VHF Radio, Transducers and microwave communication equipment.
5.    Students will troubleshoot faulty simulated circuits of common electrical and electronic circuitry to the component level.
6.    Students will demonstrate mathematical proficiency when analyzing electrical and electronic circuitry including analytical and computational skills.
