Technical Design is a design and communication skill using graphics and computers to coordinate and communicate technical information and data. This degree is designed to prepare graduates for employment as Technical Design professionals in positions as designers, draftsman, technicians, and other entry level positions in design and manufacturing. Graduates will be trained in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), computer modeling, GIS (Graphic Information Systems) and 3D printing as well as being a productive team member and problem solver. Students will learn to utilize CAD as used in a variety of industries including mechanical design, architecture, civil design, and regional planning.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Identify specialized CAD systems used in a variety of industries
- Identify, analyze, and solve narrowly defined engineering technical problems
- Interpret multi-view orthographic and three-dimensional blueprint drawings
- Create multi-view orthographic and pictorial drawings using manual drafting techniques and Computer Aided Drafting techniques to industry standards
- Create 3D digital solids using advanced CAD techniques
- Create digital files for use with 3D printers or CNC machines
- Function effectively as a member of a technical team
- Apply written, verbal, and graphical communication in both technical and non-technical environments
- Engage in, and understand the need for, self-directed continuing professional development
- Address professional and ethical responsibilities including a respect for diversity and commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement
- Research, plan and complete a project, including consideration for processes, budgets, materials, and time
