CMST 250 - Intro to Popular Communication Credits: 5
(H/DSJ) The goal of popular communication studies is to investigate how popular culture artifacts reflect a lived cultural experience, and how lived experience is influenced by popular culture. The study of popular communication is rooted in studies of folklore, rhetoric, storytelling, media, and the culture industry. We study popular culture to understand how it reflects and is reflected by the values, ideologies, concerns, and public issues of the culture responsible for its production. Popular communication serves as both a tool for dividing people along ideological and cultural lines, and for unifying people across cultures.
