CMST 263 - Sex and Gender in Communication Credits: 5
(H/DSJ) The purpose of this course is to help students understand and engage in dialogue, performance, and theory regarding sex and gender in communication. Sex and Gender in Communication centers on the role of gender and sexuality as communication practice in our everyday lives. This course is designed to increase students’ awareness of and sensitivity to other gender stereotypes, gendered biases, gendered communication practices, and the social, political, cultural, and historical contexts in which they live and communicate. This course will teach students to communicate effectively between and across multiple gender and sexuality divides as we reach out to diverse individuals and diverse audiences. Included are an introduction to major gender communication theories and principles, feminist and queer theory approaches to communication studies, and the application of these principles in local and global contexts.
Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 with a grade of 2.0 or above. 5 hours Lecture
