ENGL 154 - Fantasy Literature Credits: 5
Humanities/DSJ From epic hero quests to magical worlds, fantasy represents the power of the imagination. Fantasy’s appeal resides in more than just its whimsical fairies, daring protagonists, and frightening monsters; it offers tools for coping with reality and a way to reimagine society. In this class, students will develop close reading and literary analysis skills while exploring how this enduring genre reflects and influences changing ideas about identity, the human condition, utopian dreams, and more. By confronting, reflecting, and subverting our deepest fears and desires, fantasy imagines alternative ways to live.
