AEGS 207 - Introduction to Hip Hop Studies Credits: 5
(H/SS/DSJ) Hip Hop is a way of life. As a worldview and way of being, Hip Hop asks us to gain and create knowledge of our communities and our social, economic, and political contexts. In this course, we will explore the five elements of Hip Hop through African American, Native American, Asian American, Latino/x, and Pacific Islander histories and cultures. We will focus on each element of Hip Hop culture, including Rapping, DJing, Graffiti Art, Breakdancing, and Knowledge. Additional topics may include Hip Hop feminism, Homo Hop and LGBTQ+ representation, Krip Hop and disability justice, and Global Hip Hop Studies.
Prerequisite: Any of the following are recommended but not required: AEGS 100, AEGS 101, ENGL& 101, or SOC& 101. 5 hours lecture
