AEGS 208 - Introduction to Transgender Studies


Credits: 5

(H/SS) This course will explore the histories, identities, and lived experiences of transgender, non-binary, and gender diverse people. We will learn from diverse voices, including trans scholars, artists, and advocates, while analyzing and asking questions about how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, disability, and more. What does it mean to be trans, non-binary, or gender diverse? How have trans communities shaped culture, politics, and society? How do different cultures and historical periods understand gender identity and expression? Additional topics may include media representation, healthcare access, legal rights, and activism.

Prerequisite: Any of the following are recommended but not required: AEGS 100, AEGS 101, ENGL& 101, or SOC& 101.
